Presenter: William Garrison (University of Portsmouth)
This is a new course offered by the Advisory Service to give detailed
guidance on streaming audio and video material using the Microsoft Windows
Media Services. It will cover server design and networking issues as well
as content preparation, encoding, and rights management.
The session will be divided into two parts with the first focusing on
technology, implementation, and overcoming barriers both technical and
political within educational insitutions. The second part will explore
content development including encoding, bandwidth, and image quality in the
context of learning objectives.
William Garrison is Producer at the Learning Development Centre, University
of Portsmouth, and has been responsible for the development of extensive
streaming media resources for thousands of simultaneous users. This
includes the technical implementation for the JISC funded <Lifesign Project>
which is now online with over forty video streams for the Life Sciences.

Presenters: Greg Newton-Ingham, Head of the National Advisory Service (MAAS
Media Online) and Murray Weston, Director, BUFVC.
The use of sound can create and enhance web content.
This is a new course which is offered by BUFVC in response to the needs of
the academic community. Illustrating real uses, such as libraries and
archiving, lecturing and distance learning, this course will give
participants the technical and practical knowledge required to handle audio
material successfully.
The day covers production and reuse of audio material, associated
copyrights, explaining and demystifying technical terminology, and storing,
compressing and delivering content. There is also time allotted for
discussion and questions.
Intended audience: audio visual and computer service providers, librarians,
archivists.
Cost each course, per person, including lunch/refreshments: GBP 120.00 (GBP
102.13 +VAT),
discount rate for members and staff in BUFVC member institutions: GBP
100.00 (GBP 85.11 + VAT).
