DIVERSITY MENTORING
Excellent personal and organisational development opportunities for you
and your museum and archive
What is it?
North West Museums Service and North West Regional Archives Council have
teamed up with Manchester University Careers Department to help launch the
diversity mentoring initiative in the region’s museums and archives.
Diversity Mentoring links black and Asian, and disabled undergraduates with
a mentor from the student’s chosen sector. The mentor supports the student
by:
 giving them insight into their work and career;
 provides practical tips on job searching;
 offers advice on career thinking.
We are now looking for volunteers from museums and archives in the region
to act as mentors, as the museums and archives workforce in the region is
under-represented in the number of people from such groups.
Is there a lot of commitment needed?
No! To become a Diversity Mentor you will undertake a ½ day induction
course delivered free by Manchester University. Thereafter, if you are
assigned a student by the University, you will only need to commit to a
total of four, one-hour sessions with the student between November and
March in an academic year.
What are the benefits for me and my organisation?
 you can develop and practise your coaching and mentoring skills;
 you can demonstrate your commitment to equality and diversity;
 you may develop links with students who return as volunteers or future
members of staff.
How do I find out more?
