Feasibility study for the establishment a national collections advice centre
Resource announced in its stewardship work plan, published earlier this year in "Preserving the Past for the Future", its intention to carry out a feasibility study for the establishment a national centre for advice and information on collection management issues.
Phase 1 of the project has now begun, with three consultants contracted to help establish a clear overview of current advice and information provision to the sector. Each consultant will review one of the domains, including consultation with stakeholder. Helen Forde will report on the archive domain, Diana Grimwood-Jones on the library domain and Gaby Porter on the museum domain.
They will:
* identify and evaluate existing sources of advice and information available;
* consult with the stakeholders (e.g. the professional associations, specialist and representational groups, and regional and national cultural organisations) in order to identify the scope and level of need for such advice and information, and all current sources;
* report on current providers, and place them within the context of the overall need;
* identify and analyse gaps where advice and information is not readily available but for which there is a proven need.
The aspects of stewardship to be covered include collection care, conservation, documentation and cataloguing, risk management (security, insurance, emergency preparedness), preventive conservation (environmental monitoring and control, pest monitoring and control, housekeeping), building and facilities management, and production of surrogates.
The consultants will report in early November and the findings will be published on Resource's website.
Phase 2 of the project will be an options appraisal for the delivery of advice and information services based on the findings of the Phase 1 reviews. This will be commissioned before the end of the year.
