I feel that this may be more properly a Friday afternoon question, but here
goes anyway..
We have a number of copy letters from the Earl of Sandwich to Lord Arlington
relating to European political military and naval affairs, mainly written
from Madrid, 1667-8, which lapse periodically into a numerical code, with
occasional letters: for example "...impowering them to declare unto me the
substance of what fomerly they had done by word of mouth, viz.
741.617.685.271.348.375.16.584.371.601 & they have agreed to execute this
Commission..."; or "..to see if Portugal will be persuaded to agree in this
manner (830.340.337.129.170.491.540.289.r.745.731.262.742.13.l.741.y...."
Has anybody any clues as to the meaning? Perhaps replies had better be off
list in case it is still classified.
