Let's get a bit controversial on a Monday afternoon. The following views are
mine, not those of Hull City Council, nor necessarily the Society of
Archivists.

It seems, to say the least, unfortunate that a state-of-the-art Archives
Centre funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund is to be staffed by archivists
starting at Scale 4, two scales below the Society of Archivists recommended
minimum for newly qualified archivists(Scale 6) and even below scale 5, the
minimum salary at which the Society will accept jobs for advertisement in
ARC. Assuming the successful candidate started at the bottom of scale 4, it
would take them 3 years to progress to the bottom of scale 5; 5 or 6 years
before they're paid what the Society thinks newly qualified archivists
should be paid.

While it might seem unfair to single out one authority over another, as
professionals we should take seriously those employers who seek to undermine
the worth of the whole profession by undervaluing members of it. There seem
to be a lot of reasonably paid jobs around at the moment. I wonder if market
forces will come into play.

I'll put the lid back on Pandora's box now.

Subject: Norfolk Record Office: job opportunity

Norfolk Record Office

Archivist: scale 4/5/6 (£13,764-£19,014)

In 2003, the Norfolk Record Office will be moving from its current
temporary premises in Norwich to a new Archive Centre next to County
Hall. The Centre, which is being built with the aid of a grant from the
Heritage Lottery Fund, will include facilities for a Norfolk Sound
Archive and an exhibition gallery equipped for the display of original
records. It will also be the home of the East Anglian Film Archive,
currently based at the University of East Anglia.

As part of the build-up to operating in the Archive Centre, the NRO has
expanded its establishment of permanent posts to 32, including
additional archivists and searchroom assistants and two education and
outreach officers.

This post would provide an ideal opportunity for a recently qualified
archivist to acquire varied experience in a county record office with an
exceptional range of archives and to be involved in developing services
in the new premises. As one of a team of nine archivists, your remit
will include accessioning records, cataloguing using CALM 2000 software,
assisting researchers, and answering enquiries.

Further details and an application form (returnable by 30 September
2002) are available from the Personnel Department, Department of
Cultural Services, County Hall, Martineau Lane, Norwich, NR1 2UA.
