required to fill this post, offering training in
archival work before taking a professional qualification.
Duties include dealing with search room enquiries, involvement in the
archives reprographics service,
retrieving/replacing documents for readers, and creating archive finding
aids using CALM archive software.
Training offered covers the whole range of archival responsibilities, as
well as opportunities to learn medieval
and early-modern palaeography. Additionally the postholder will
undertake a long term project, perhaps leading
to a publication.
Applicants should be organised, flexible, able to work in a small team
and have excellent communication skills.
In addition they require, or should be expected to gain 2:1 or above in
history or a related discipline.
The salary will be £9,983 per annum.

Information for Candidates
The Borthwick Institute is one of the largest and most important archive
repositories in the North of England.
Part of the University of York and the repository for its archive, it
also holds the records of the diocese and
archbishop of York from the thirteenth-century to the present day, and
the parish records for the archdeaconry of
York. In addition it houses the archives of local businesses, including
Rowntree plc, and shares its building with
the York Health Trust Archives, one of the largest public health
archives in the country. Many other archives are
also held.
The archive receives over 6,000 visitors a year, including family
historians, students of all ages from sixth-form
to postgraduates, and visiting academics from overseas.
ARCHIVE ASSISTANT
An enthusiastic graduate intending to pursue a career in archives is
required to fill this one year post, which
offers training in archival work before taking a professional
qualification.
Duties include working in the search rooms answering enquiries from
readers there and telephone enquiries,
playing a part in the archives reprographics service, retrieving and
replacing documents for readers and
creating archive finding aids using CALM, the dedicated archive software
package. The work does
occasionally involve lifting and carrying heavy objects, within health
and safety guidelines.
As well as performing daily routine tasks, the postholder always has a
long term project, usually leading to a
publication, and they must have the flexibility to marry the different
demands of these areas. The post-holder will
be given the opportunity to learn medieval and early-modern palaeography
during the year. Tuition in Latin is
also available.
The contract begins on 2 September 2002.
The salary is £9,983 per annum.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Applicants should have, or expect to obtain in Summer 2002, a good
degree (2:1 or above) in history or a
related discipline.
In addition, applicants should be able to demonstrate:
Written and oral communications skills - the ability to explain
clearly and to relate to a wide range of
members of the public, in person and on the telephone.
Organisational skills: the ability to plan work in order to complete
tasks within deadlines and to adapt to
changing circumstances.
Flexible approach: able to work alone and with others in a small

changing circumstances.
A genuine interest in pursuing a career in archives.
