As an archivist married to a geography teacher who has never worn a
cardigan in his life I feel I must contribute something to this debate - on
a serious note, archivists continue to have an image problem - along with
many other professions. Yes the Society of Archivists should be a first
point of call for the media, but it is also up to every one of us to be
aware of the image we give of our profession to those around us. There will
be some out there tutting and saying that they don't want to have to wear
suits, cardigans, overalls or whatever, but we all portray an image whether
we like it or not, so we might as well give it a bit of thought and try to
ensure it is the image we want to portray.
