New information on PRO website for Archivists
<http://www.pro.gov.uk/archives>
The "archives" section of the PRO website has been recently updated and
revised. It includes information of interest to places of deposit for public
records and includes new content specifically aimed at archivists working
with public records. The pages include the following sections:
A2A (Access to Archives)
www.pro.gov.uk/archives/a2a/default.htm
These pages are provided for archivists and others who are contributing
catalogues to the A2A database, and for those seeking detailed information
on the A2A programme. They contain information about A2A, training,
funding, project planning and management, news, standards and guidelines for
contributors and useful links.
Archives Policy and Legislation
www.pro.gov.uk/archives/archivepolicy/default.htm
These pages contain information on the Public Records Acts (including links
to the full text of the Acts), the Inter-Departmental Archives Committee,
the PRO's acquisition and disposition policies, the Government Policy on
Archives and the Government Policy on Archives Action Plan.
Mapping Projects
www.pro.gov.uk/archives/map/default.htm
Here you will find summaries and full reports from the English and Welsh
Mapping Projects, and links to the Missing Link and the Archival Account of
Scotland survey reports.
Standards and Guidance
www.pro.gov.uk/archives/standards/default.htm
This page contains information for archivists on preservation and storage,
records management, access to records, cataloguing, copyright and links to
other useful webpages. There is also a new page which lists the existing
guidance circulars available for specific types of public records such as
Magistrates' Courts & Petty Sessions, Coroners' records, NHS authorities,
Trusts and Hospitals, and prison records. Several of these guidance
documents are available online, and links are provided. For example, we are
now hosting the Health Archives Group's guidance booklet, "Hospital Patient
Case Record: A guide to their retention and disposal" which has recently
been revised. We hope to put more of these online in future.
You will also be able to access online issues of the PRO's quarterly
bulletin for places of deposit, "Beyond the PRO".
Lottery Advisory Service
www.pro.gov.uk/archives/lottery/default.htm
This page contains an introduction to the Service, a guide on fundraising
for archives, information on lottery workshops and contact details for the
Archive Lottery Advisor.
Public Services Quality Group
www.pro.gov.uk/archives/psqg/default.htm
These pages now contain up to date information about the Group, the Steering
Group, Steering Group minutes, results from the Survey of Visitors to
British Archives and information about the Draft National Standard for
Access to Archives (including a copy of the text). The pages also contain
information on the Annual Public Services Quality Forum, and we hope to
include speakers' presentations and other notes from past PSQG events in due
course.
