I only hope this unaccustomed flurry of "please remove me" messages has got
nothing to do with the fact that the list seems to have suddenly woken up.
Open debate is (in my view) exactly what the list should be for and we don't
see enough of it. I'm sure that many useful contributions are lost simply
because people will insist on replying off list. And don't anyone try to
tell me that they would never have time to read every single message -
neither do I, but it's nice to be given the opportunity to select.

PS: I've often wondered about the longer contributions and when it is that
people actually write them. How many employers would and how many would not
regard their composition (and their reading) as being a legitimate use of
work time? Or are they mostly written at high speed, during lunch breaks?
Or by the retired? Are all staff, from the most senior to the most junior,
at general liberty to contribute if they so wish?
Anyway, I'm on leave today, so I don't have to worry too much about that. I
suppose I'd better go and start getting the tea ready.
