Whilst I am sure that we all have endless anecdotes on the non recognition
of our profession. The real point is that at last we are getting recognised
more and more by diffrent organisations such as Government in the form of
the DCMS and ReSource and the private sector as having a vital role to play
within the organisations for which we work. Also the media do seem more
inclined to recognise and acknowledge the assistance we give in providing
background and input to their many documentaries and story lines. Surely
this sort of recognition will eventually filter through to the general
public and increase our profile.
Although having said that I was concerned to see, admittedly only a part of
the Andy Warhol documnetary last night, where the assistant archivist was
displayed as looking after Andy's art and shoe collection, surely a job for
a curator rather than an archivist. As I said I only saw a part of the
documentary so perhaps real records were mentioned later. If not it is this
sort of
mis representation of the work of Archivists that is the real problem.
