Public Record Office, Kew
Cataloguing Assistant, Labouring Men, Labouring Women, e-Access Department
18 month fixed term contract
£15,099 - £15,250
The Public Record Office (PRO) is the National Archive for England, Wales
and the United Kingdom. Its holdings cover over 1000 years of history -
from the Domesday Book to the latest Government papers to be released to
the public. The PRO is at the forefront of the drive to make the nation's
memory and culture available to the widest possible audience. The PRO's
online catalogue (PROCAT) was launched 18 months ago. It provides users
both at Kew and over the World Wide Web with a powerful way of searching
for records, including the use of free text searches, browsing, indexes and
guided searches.
The project Labouring Men, Labouring Women is a Heritage Lottery funded
project to incorporate descriptions onto the PRO's on-line catalogue
(PROCAT) of approximately 30,000 files on labour, social, economic and
employment history covering the period 1897-1933 and created by the
Ministry of Labour and its successors. The records contain a wealth of
information of national, regional and local significance on labour and
employment issues. They cover all employment sectors and deal with
industrial and arbitration disputes and relations, working conditions and
pay and employment policy in the different employment sectors.
As a member of the e-Access cataloguing team reporting to the Catalogue
Manager, you will input descriptons currently held in paper form onto the
PRO's on-line electronic catalogue (PROCAT). These descriptions will be
available not only to users visiting the PRO but also through the PRO's
website.
The main duties are: to match descriptions held in paper form to existing
numbers on PROCAT; to input descriptions held in paper form onto PROCAT; to
check the quality of descriptions and identify those needing enrichment.
Training in identifying good catalogue descriptions will be provided and
experience in this area is not necessary.
Candidates must have data input/keyboarding or word processing skills, team
working and interpersonal skills, initiative and a willingness to learn new
skills as required and analytical skills. A knowledge of or an interest in
archives is desirable, as is an interest in history or the work of the PRO
and experience of working in the heritage sectors.
Closing date: 3rd June 2002
