The Glamorgan Record Office has been awarded £48,600 under the HLF
Your Heritage scheme for a project entitled Cardiff: The Building of
a Capital. The money will be used to catalogue and conserve over
40,000 building regulation plans dating from the 1870s to the 1960s.
Once the project has been completed a database of the plans will be
mounted on the Glamorgan Record Office website, together with
information and resources promoting the use of the plans. The end of
the project, in the autumn of 2003, will be marked by an exhibition.
The project is being developed in partnership with Cardiff Local
Studies Library, the Butetown Local History and Arts Centre and the
educational advisory services of 5 local authorities.
Commenting on the successful application Jennifer Stewart, HLF
Manager for Wales, said: "This is a very important and well thought
out project that will help local people have a better understanding
of how Cardiff grew as a town and later a city.
"As Cardiff approaches its 100th anniversary (2005), improved public
access to the records and the resulting exhibition - Cardiff: The
Building of a Capital - will form an impressive tribute to the
determination of local people to develop the town into the Capital of
Wales."
