Understanding Archives and Records Management
Two-day SoA training programme
16 April & 21 May 2002
Venue: National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh
For archive assistants and other para-professionals working in archives and
records centres.
Content of the course
· The wider world of archives
· Record-keeping systems: archives; modern records; current filing
· Legal issues surrounding archives and records
· Basic handling, preservation and packing
· Customer care, including training users in getting the most out of their
visit to the record office and good handling practice
· Security issues
· Disaster prevention and recovery

The course will be delivered as a mixture of presentations, facilitated
group discussions and workshops with small-group work. There will be some
course work for participants to work on between the two days.
This will be an opportunity for you to meet others working at a similar
skill level within your archive or record centre, and to discuss issues that
are particularly relevant to you.
A course handbook will be provided as part of the fee; it includes glossary,
bibliography, contact details for appropriate sources of information,
Webliography, presentation notes and other useful data.
Fee: £250 SoA members/£280 non-members
includes lunch and refreshments for both days
