Adding to Nigel's comments about adverts for archive oosts, I would point
out that although Registration is not stated in the advert it has been my
experience that once you receive detailed application information the
requirement for registered candidates only is stated there. I support the
view that if registered applicants are required that this should be stated
in the initial advert which would save time for both applicants and
employers. Stipulation for registrated applicants may help the professional
image but I also share Christopher's concerns that this could lead to a
closed shop situation.

I was looking through the job circulars for the last 2 1/2 months this
morning and noticed that not a single job advert asked for a Registered
Archivist. A few did manage to ask for a qualification from a course
recognised / approved by the Society of Archivists but none for an RMSA.
None even asked that you should be intending to apply for or even working
towards registration. If this has ceased to be a required attribute for
getting a job then this a further diminution in the importance of the
Registration process.
Can anyone enlighten me as to whether this is the case.
