The North East Regional Archives Strategy began the task of mapping
archives in the North East region. This project is intended to take forward
the strategy by identifying in more detail the content of archive
collections and especially those held in museums and libraries, and
assessing their current levels of care and management. This will then
enable NEMLAC, together with the North East Regional Archives Council, to
develop new strategies for the care and development of archive collections
across the region
Project Purpose
The purpose of this project is to establish the scope and content of
archival collections in museums and libraries and further investigate the
contents of known archive repositories. The project will also assess the
quality of care and management of collections. The project will require
site visits to an estimated 45 museums, archives and libraries throughout
the North East region. A list of these locations is available from NEMLAC.
The collections to be covered by the project include standard archive
deposits but also specific deposits of ephemera, photographs, printed
material, moving image and sound recordings, and collections on special
topics.
Key Issues to Address
The collections: size, main subject areas, background and history of
deposits, formats, significance, finding aids.
Accommodation: storage, environment, security and emergency preparedness.
Management: access to professional archive staff, standards, collecting,
conservation, funding, access to and use of ICT.
