I have been asked to post this vacancy on behalf of Queens College Archives,
London. The salary is negotiable, however, it will be at least local government
scale 5 pro rata (c£80-£90 per day)
PART TIME ARCHIVIST REQUIRED
History: Queen's College London is a girl's private secondary day school in
central London (Harley Street). It was founded in 1848, originally as part of
the Governesses' Benevolent Society to assist governesses by providing formal
educational qualifications and c1898 almost became, like Bedford College, a
constituent college of the University of London.
Famous old girld include Dorothea Beale, founder of Cheltenham Ladies College
and St Hilda's College, Oxford; Frances Buss, founder of the North London
Collegiate School; Sophia Jex-Blake, the first English-educated woman doctor;
Gertrude Bell, writer, traveller and archaeologist and Katherine Mansfield.
Early members of staff included Frederick Denison Maurice, Professor of English
Literature and history at KIngs College, London (founder), Charles Kingsley,
William Sterndale Bennett and others. This is a comprehensive and important
archive in the field of education. The school is proud of its archive and would
like to use it productively.
