The ARCHON Portal
http://www.hmc.gov.uk/archon/archonportal/archonportal.htm is the
Historical Manuscripts Commission’s (HMC) database of archival resources,
projects and initiatives. It contains brief descriptions, contact details
and web links for over 280 projects and covers key themes such as the
national archive network, online finding aids, preservation and
conservation and surveying and mapping collections. The following are just
a few of the projects that have been added within the last month:
Clergy of the Church of England Database
The Clergy of the Church of England Database will construct a relational
database of clergymen of the Church of England between 1540 and 1835.The
database will take advantage of new technology to provide a research tool
for both national and local historians who often need to discover
biographical information about individual clergymen.
Bfi Online
The aim of the project is to create an online resource for lifelong
learning and to support secondary education. Working with the National Film
and Television Archive, and with the consent of rights holders including
Carlton International, Canal+Image and the BBC, the digitisation of moving
images, still photographs, posters, production designs, scripts, personal
papers and recorded extracts from key filmmakers and actors will be
produced.
TUC History On-line
TUC History On-line aims to create a web resource to improve access to
heritage material in the TUC collections. Documents and images will be
digitised and text links will be created. The content will result in a
timeline from 1860-2000 illustrated by images, short video clips and
metadata using four key resources - the TUC Congress Reports, the General
Strike collection, the manuscript of 'Ragged Trousered Philanthropist' by
Robert Tressell and the 1888 Matchgirls's Strike Register.
Spinning the Web: the story of the cotton industry
The project aims to tell the story of the cotton industry from medieval
beginnings to its decline in the post-war era. This will be achieved by
digitising around 20,000 items relating to the cotton industry selected
from collections held in institutions across the North West. These items
will be made available on a single web site which will form a comprehensive
learning resource on cotton and other textiles.
HMC is constantly looking to expand the number of projects on the Portal.
If you are a participant in a project that you would like to be included an
online form is available at
