TECHNICIAN
Applications are invited from applicants with a background in metallurgy,
geology or materials science and experience of sample preparation and
analysis and geophysical prospecting.
The successful applicant will prepare samples for optical microscopy ( thin
and polished sections of ceramics, rocks and metals) and for XRF analysis
(pressed pellets). He/she will be assisted by another technician, but will
additionally be expected to teach and demonstrate the techniques and to
assist in identification of minerals under the microscope. Teaching and
demonstrating techniques for geophysical prospecting and remote sensing;
overseeing the issue of equipment and responsibility for keeping it in good
working order are also primary tasks. He/she will run new
software-controlled XRF equipment, and will assist as necessary in the
operation of other analytical equipment including an electron microprobe and
two SEM s.
The successful applicant will also be responsible for the good order of the
laboratories and will be expected to assist, as required, in the teaching
and research that is carried out in those rooms and elsewhere.
Applicants must have the flexibilty to work to strict deadlines in a
non-standard environment. An interest in archaeology is desirable and a
clean driving licence is an advantage.
Salary is on the Technician E scale #19,298 to #22,013 per annum inclusive
of #2,262 London Allowance.
