Research Associate (RA1A)
Applications are sought for the above post which is full time for one year
and subject to probation. The postholder will be based at the Imperial
College Charing Cross campus, Hammersmith, London.
The successful applicant will work on two related projects, funded by the
Royal College of General Practitioners and the BUPA Foundation, Exploring
the patient-doctor partnership in white European and south Asian adults
with asthma: Qualitative interview study and Social exclusion and trust in
the use of medical records: Qualitative interview study. The projects are
based in the Centre for Primary Care and Social Medicine at Imperial
College, and involve collaboration between general practitioners, social
scientists and a medical ethicist. The work will include: design of
interview topic guides, recruitment, interviewing, and analysis of
qualitative data obtained from groups of patients from different cultural
and ethnic backgrounds on: q The disease experience of asthma
q The doctor-patient and patient-NHS relationships q Use of medical records
in research and health services management The post would suit a health
service researcher, social or medical anthropologist, psychologist, or
qualitative sociologist with a higher degree who has experience of working
with socially excluded groups of different ethnic origins. Fluency in one
or more languages from South Asia (Indian Subcontinent) is essential.
Evidence of ability to organise and undertake a schedule of work and to
write up findings (in English) are also essential, as is experience of
presenting findings to non-specialists. There are possibilities for
flexible working hours. The appointment will be made on the RA1A scale, in
the range £17,626 to £26,491 plus £2,134 per annum London Allowance. To
