Hi there,

I've only recently discovered Microsoft's Knowledge Base (a database of
questions and answers from Microsoft's Technical team)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?ln=EN-US&pr=kbinfo&

I did a search there for your question and it came up with a solution (I'm
not quite sure if it's the same, but it might work or you may find the right
answer using more appropriate search keywords)
http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q238124

I hope it works!

Kathleen

......a JOB!!!!!

Dear all,

I am due to be laid of from my current role (thankfully) where I am in a
position that utilises my stats education/enthusiasm/knowledge, very little.
I am now looking to take the brave step in the direction I truley wish to
work, Medical Statistics. If anyone can advise me of any positions that may
be available, of any specialist agencies or of how to get into the industry
in general it would be kindly appreciated.

My CV is available upon request.

Thanks very much

Kathy May

Subject: QUERY: Statistical software for medical undergraduates

Dear Colleagues,
We are looking for a good statistics package to help teach some medical =
statistics to medical undergraduates in the new Peninsula Medical =
School.

We already use a variety of packages for general undergraduate and =
postgraduate courses (Minitab, SPSS, StatGraphics, S-Plus) but are =
looking for something with more of a medical feel. Something which =
provides interpretation, rather than just numerical output, would be =
useful. =20

The statistics learning will be spread over all 5 years of the course, =
rather than concentrated in a short course. Also, much of the learning =
will be problem-driven and students will work independently or in groups =
with minimal staff input.

I'd appreciate any comments on suitability for medical students, =
usability, ease of installation on a network, quality of documentation, =
help and support. The reviews on the CHEST web-site and the LTSN-MSOR =
site are a bit too non-specific for medical students (or non-existent).

Any suggestions on CAL-type packages (we currently have ActiveStats) =
would also be helpful.

I'll happily collate answers and copy to Allstat.

Subject: StatsDirect as statistical software for medical undergraduates

StatsDirect statistical software is being taken up by a lot of medical
undergraduate courses.

StatsDirect was written to support statistical appreciation,
particularly of medical users. It contains a help system rich in
learning resources and produces output that adds descriptive
interpretation to raw results. It is therefore well suited to
statistical learning that is spread out over a long undergraduate
curriculum, and provides the eventual graduate with a potent general
statistical tool that is affordable.

You can try it (full version for 10 days) from:
http://www.statsdirect.com/update.htm

List members involved with medical statistical curriculum development
are welcome to a complimentary licence for their personal use.

A thesis describing the 12-year development of StatsDirect is available
at http://www.statsdirect.com/thesis/md.pdf for those who are
interested.

The StatsDirect R&D programme is vigorous, and medical schools are given
priority in new function requests.

Kind regards

Subject: STUDENTSHIPS, MRes at St Andrews/Dundee

There are still 3 NERC studentships available for students with a
mathematical, physical or molecular science first degree, who wish
to move into biology. These studentships are funded to help address
the national shortage of biologists with strong quantitative skills.
The degree is particularly suited to mathematicians and statisticians
who wish to carry out interdisciplinary research, utilising their
quantitative skills to further research in environmental science.

The degree comprises 3 blocks:

Block 1: 4 modules, comprising:

Basic concepts in ecology and evolution

3 from: Plant responses to the environment
          Conservation biology
          Environmental microbiology and ecotoxicology
          Marine ecology and physiology
          Environmental genomics
          Wildlife population assessment

          Also a mini-project

Block 2: 5 core modules:

Essential scientific skills and relevant legislation
          Statistical modelling
          Case studies in environmental biology
          Modelling ecological dynamics
          Management and entrepreneurship in research

Block 3: A substantial research project

Dear all,

A friend of mine is interested in doing a one-year program (or there about)
in Information Technology in UK, can anyone who knows a good but not
expensive school where this can be done let me know the address of the
school and their website (if any).

Thanks

Basil.

Subject: QUERY: WORD formatting

Firstly, apologies to the list for sending a query which is not about =
statistics. However, I expect some people on the list will have =
encountered this problem before and managed to solve it. It seemed =
easier for me to post a query here first rather than try to find a more =
appropriate list (yes, I know I'm just lazy).

I have a WORD document which switches back and forth from portrait to =
landscape. The sections are separated by means of Section markers =
inserted using Insert/Break. The problem is that when I go from =
portrait to landscape WORD always wants to put the first page of the =
landscape section on an odd-numbered page, so whatever type of Section =
Break I insert, WORD changes it to "Section Break (odd page)". If the =
previous page was odd numbered then the next (even) page number is =
simply omitted. It seems that WORD is convinced this document is going =
to be printed double-sided, but of course it is not and I naturally want =
the page numbering to be contiguous.

I've tried several things to get round this, and hunted through all the =
option pages and help files to see if I can find a way to overcome it, =
without success.

Apologies once again,

Dennis Chanter

Industrial CASE PhD Studentship

Modelling the spatio-temporal distribution of slugs for scenarios of
climate change

Applications are invited from UK and EU citizens (EU citizens are eligible
for tuition fees only) for a BBSRC funded PhD studentship available from 1
October 2002 to study modelling the spatio-temporal distribution of slugs
for scenarios of climate change.

The student will back-cast the model for the last 30 years, using observed
climate data for different geographical regions, and in the absence of hard
slug data use data for the sales of molluscicide (by region) to validate
the model output. In the process, the student will have to develop a simple
model for farmer behaviour for the uptake of molluscide use; in essence how
farmers increasingly use chemicals having experienced slug problems. The
next stage of the project will be to use scaling-up techniques and climate
change scenarios to forecast where and when slug damage is likely to occur
and the likely usage, and change in farmer behaviour, of molluscicide.
Finally, for different =93what-if=94 scenarios of application, the student
w=
ill
analyse the effects of climate change on slug population dynamics.

The successful candidate will be mainly based at IACR-Rothamsted,
Harpenden, Herts, but will also include a period of time at the industrial
location, which is De Sangosse, Romsey, U.K. An annual stipend of =A311,500
will be payable.

Informal enquiries welcome to Dr. David Bohan by email:
[log in to unmask], or on 01582 763133 x 2335..

To apply please send your CV and a covering letter to Dr David Bohan,
Plant and Invertebrate Ecology Division, IACR-Rothamsted, Harpenden, Herts,
AL5 2JQ. Closing date 30 July 2002. Ref 614.
