Thanks to a number of people:

Dear Stephen Eyres
I will recommend MathType (http://www.dessci.com/) if you use MSWord. If,
however, you are preparing longer documents I think you must choose another
text processor, such as the free package LaTeX
(http://www.math.auc.dk/~dethlef/Tips/).
Hope this helps you.

Most responses received have referred to the equation editor that can be
installed with MSWord (Guy forrester, Omar Bouamra, Laura Miller, and
others). Omar Bouamra explains the use below:
Dear Colonel Eyres,
In MS word there is a built in macro called 'Equation'. To get it Go to
insert then click on object: alist ogbject will appear then select MS
equation 3.0 or other version. If you don't have equation you must install
MS Word again and mention the to include Equation.
Hope this will help.

The equation editor suits my requirements. Jorn's link to mathtype provides
some manufactor's comparisons between Mathtype and Equation Editor. It also
offers a connection to a 30-day trial period. Down-load takes about 5
minutes. It's far more comprehensive than anything I need--but others will
undoubtedly find uses for it.
Thanks again to all who replied.
