Top Math Citations
(from AMSTAT News: November 2002, pp. 6 - 7)
Eighteen of the 25 most cited mathematical scientists in the world in
1991-2001 were statisticians or biostatisticians. The May/June 2002
issue of Science Watch, a publication of the Institute for Scientific
Information (ISI), featured a survey of mathematics and statistics
research over the last 10 years. Institutions, individual
mathematicians and statisticians, and journals are ranked in order of
citations and overall impact on the scientific community.
The rankings come from Essential Science Indicators, a Thomson/ISI
Web-based evaluation tool and are based on papers published and cited
in more than 300 ISI-indexed journals of mathematics and statistics
between 1991 and December 2001. The information was published in the
May/June 2002 issue of Science Watch.
The author list was compiled by counting the total number of times
that articles by each mathematical scientists were cited in
scientific journals in the given time period. The top 25 scientists
were found and ranked by the number of citations received.
The number of citations is widely viewed as an overall measure of
scientific impact and influence. ISI publishes the Science Citation
Index and the Social Science Citation Index, which are generally
regarded as the leading sources of citation information,
In addition to the list of individual authors, the Science Watch
article also listed the top 15 Highly Cited Journals in Mathematics,
1991-2001.
