Postdoctoral Research Associate
Appplications are invited for a Research Associateship of up to 2.5 years,
starting in March 2003 or soon thereafter. Salary: £18,265 - £27,339 per
annum. The post forms part of a large BBSRC-funded project on Modelling
Life History/Dispersal Strategy Interactions to Predict Persistence and
Diversity in Agricultural Landscapes with collaborating groups at the
Universities of Cambridge, East Anglia and Plymouth. Using linyphiid
spiders as a model of wind-dispersed invertebrates in fragmented agricultural
landscapes subject to catastrophic disturbances from farming operations,
the project aims to produce a model that will predict the effects of
agriculture on spider population abundance and diversity in order to
aid the development of sustainable agricultural production. Further
details are available at http://www.statslab.cam.ac.uk/~steve/BBSRC/
The postholder will be required to provide mathematical and statistical
modelling input to the project and will begin by generalising an existing
one-dimensional stochastic model of wind-borne spider dispersal, into a
two-dimensional model incorporating meteorological data. The dispersal
model will be integrated with a spatially explicit population dynamics
model and Bayesian methods will be used for both parameter estimation
and prediction. Candidates should have (or expect shortly to receive)
a PhD in statistics, mathematical modelling or other related field. The
ability to work as part of a team and to communicate with ecologists is
essential.
