The Department of Statistics plans to expand significantly and may be
offering more than one position at each level of Lecturer/Senior

Professor Matt Wand will join the Department in January 2003. UNSW is
one of Australia's leading universities and the School of Mathematics is
comprised of the Department of Applied Mathematics, Department of Pure
Mathematics and the Department of Statistics. The School has an
outstanding record in attracting external research support and operates
an extensive visitors program for research collaboration. It has a
strong commitment to excellence in the service teaching it provides to
over 4,000 students from a range of Faculties. There is a vigorous
graduate program. The School has state-of-the-art computing facilities,

high-performance computing facilities. The Department conducts a wide
range of teaching, including specialist undergraduate and honours
statistics, a Masters degree by coursework, and PhD supervision. The
Department's contribution to service teaching is substantial and
regarded as centrally important to its mission. Current areas of
research include space-time modelling with applications to
environmental, meteorological and health risk assessment; semiparametric
regression and non-parametric methods; mixed models and latent variables
models; Bayesian methods and Markov chain Monte Carlo computational
methods; time series analysis, stochastic processes and stochastic
differential equations; mathematical and statistical modelling in
financial applications; extreme value methods. The Department is
particularly interested in expanding its research and teaching capacity
in the areas of biostatistics, bioinformatics, computational biology,
analysis of functional magnetic resonance image data, statistical
modelling in finance, spatio-temporal modelling and statistical
computing, but will consider appointments in other areas.

science; an innovative research program; clear evidence of effective
teaching experience in statistics, including service teaching; excellent

in internationally refereed journals; evidence of capacity to supervise
research projects at honours and postgraduate levels.

salary range for Senior Lecturer is A$67,471 - A$77,800 per year
 depending on qualifications and experience.
The positions are available from June 2003; however, an earlier or later
start date can be negotiated. Membership of a University approved
