Background information :
Unilever’s Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre (SEAC), based in
Bedfordshire, England, is responsible for ensuring the Occupational, Consumer
and Environmental safety of all of Unilever products and processes. The
Probability Assessment Department provides mathematical, statistical and
problem solving expertise for human health and environmental risk assessments
of Unilever products and ingredients.
The Role
In your role as an Assistant Modeller, you will help with the development and
application of new models and novel risk assessments in the areas of
environmental exposure to chemicals and food microbiology. You will be given
basic generic training in the construction and validation of empirical and
conceptual models. Specific training will be given in:
Microbiological modelling and risk assessment for food safety
Environmental fate modelling of chemicals (especially predicting the fate of
“down the drain” chemicals in rivers)
The work will help to improve our risk assessments, thereby ensuring the
continued safety of Unilever products and the reputation of Unilever as a
responsible company.
Experience & Qualifications
You will be a recent graduate with a good honours degree (2i or above) in a
science or engineering subject and preferably with a relevant MSc to work in
the Probability Assessment Department. Some experience in mathematical
modelling (and in particular the use of Monte Carlo simulation) would be a
great advantage, however, candidates with strong numerical and IT skills will
also be considered. Similarly, some experience in Microbiology and/or
Environmental Science would be beneficial. The successful candidate will need
to be able to work equally well independently or as part of a
multi-disciplinary team.
