Title: "Developments of the Venn Diagram - Old and New"
Abstract:
"The Venn diagram (Venn 1880) is widely used to illustrate
relationships in logic and probability. A development by Lewis Carroll
(Carroll 1896) used rectangular regions to represent all eight
treatment combinations in a two-level, three-factor design. These
rectangular regions were given a metric and used to represent
occurrence probabilities of gene types (Edwards and Edwards, 1992).
Lim and Lam (1997) developed the rectangular diagram to represent run
order and blocking in two-level factorial designs.
David Boniface is working on a separate development of the original
Venn diagram which extends the concept to take account of synergy in
representing the allocation of sums of squares to factors in
non-orthogonal two-factor designs. (Synergy is the situation in which
the explanatory power of a set of variables acting together is greater
than the sum of the explanatory powers of each acting alone)."
