£18,000 - £20,800
(2 years fixed term appointment, may become permanent)
Bootle, Merseyside
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is looking to recruit two statistical
officers to join its Epidemiology and Medical Statistics Unit (EMSU).
Reducing the incidence of ill health caused or made worse by workplace risk
factors is a key aim of HSE. EMSU undertakes epidemiological
investigations of workplace risk factors and uses new and existing data
sources to help quantify the extent, including scale and distribution, of
occupational ill health in Great Britain. This information is used in HSE
policy development including the provision of information to Government,
HSE policy makers, HSE inspectors, health and safety professionals, and the
general public.
You will be responsible for supporting the Statistician Section Head, in
the provision of statistical and epidemiological information on the causes
and distribution of occupational ill health. You will be involved in
epidemiological studies and surveys, and the analysis and interpretation of
statistical data, with the aim of providing advice on a range of topical or
political occupational health issues.
You will need an honours degree with substantial statistical content, good
IT skills (ideally SPSS or Stata), and the ability to communicate to
non-statisticians. Knowledge of epidemiological methods is an advantage,
although not essential as training will be provided.
For an application form and prospectus (to be returned by 7 February 2002),
please contact Mr. A. Webster, Room 243, Magdalen House, Stanley Precinct,
Bootle, Merseyside L20 3QZ. (Tel: 0151 951 4537; Email
