Microsoft Excel for Statistics? What you can and cannot do: 20-21 February
This course gives practical experience in the use of Excel for data summary
and presentation, and for other basic statistical work. It concentrates
primarily on the areas where Excel really can excel. This includes
organising data, i.e. basic data management, tabulation using Excel's pivot
tables, and graphics. We also review Excel's facilities for further
statistical applications and how add-ins, or other statistical software, can
be used together with Excel.
Course content
- Data management in Excel
- Pivot tables for cross tabulations
- Good graphics with Excel
- Further statistical features of Excel
- Add-ins and the use of Excel with other statistical software
Advanced Use of Microsoft Excel: 22 February
The ease with which MS Excel can be extended is a welcome and useful
surprise for those who wish or need to use Excel for their statistical work.
This one-day course introduces participants to ways in which Excel can
easily be extended using macros and other features of Visual Basic for
Applications (VBA). Examples include simple programs to reorganise data and
to perform simple statistical calculations.
Course content
- Solving common problems
- The role for simple macros to eliminate repetition in Excel
- Moving on from macros to simple VBA
- Making the extra facilities into an "add-in"
