Hi Eve,
I'd like to emphasize that the SAS procedure GENMOD does NOT fit generalized
linear mixed models. It only handles generalized estimating equations (GEE),
which fits marginal means only. I think that, at present, the best software
to fit generalized linear mixed models is SAS proc NLMIXED, which uses
quadrature methods for integrating out the random effects. As far as I know,
most other packages are based on approximations of the integrand, which does
not provide good approximations in cases of binary outcomes with little
repetition within the subjects.
I hope this answers your question. Best regards,

Subject: QUERY: Software for generalized linear mixed models
Dear all,
Could anyone tell me if another software than SAS (proc GENMOD) can perform
generalized linear mixed models (GLMM). At the moment I have SPSS, GLIM and
R and some colleagues have S-PLUS and STATISTICA. As far as I could see the
softwares that I have can't perform GLMM. I wonder if it is really
essential to get SAS for this kind of analysis.
Thanks a lot in advance for your replies.
Best wishes,
