Statistics in Genetics:
Hardy-Wenberg equilibrium and disequilibrium.
Dr Valentina Moskvina
According to the Hardy-Wenberg principle it is assumed that the
various genotypes in a population are in equilibrium and their
proportions therefore remain constant from one generation to another.
Estimation of allele frequencies and illustrative examples under
Hardy-Wenberg equilibrium will be presented. However this is only
true in large populations with no genetic drift, and where there is
random mating with no significant assortative mating or inbreeding,
no gene flow from migration or racial admixture, no selection against
a particular genotype and a constant rate of mutation. Estimation of
these factors affecting the genetic structure of populations will be
discussed.
