Some news about two distinuguished members of AFLS:
* Renée Birks (Glasgow University) has taken early
retirement recently. She has made a substantial
contribution to the life of AFLS over the years - e.g.
hosting the 1996 conference, playing a major role in the
AFLS Grammar Initiative, Videogrammaire. We wish her a very
happy retirement and thank her for all her excellent work.
* And Congratulations to David Nott (Lancaster University)
who has been awarded a personal Chair at Lancaster. David
has also been an enthusiastic and active member of AFLS for
many years, and is of course well known for his remarkable
energy in producing materials for advanced learners - from
'Actualites francaises' (1971/72, wasn't it?) to 'Points de
depart' and 'French Grammar Explained'. (There's a piece by
David on Translation on the new Subject centre website.)
