This is just to let everyone know that after the outbreak of unsolicited
pornographic emails received by some members of this list, on the advice of
the JISCMAIL helpdesk, I have tightened up the procedures for who can join
this list and how messages can be sent to it. I hope that this will prevent
any future "hijacking" of the list to peddle inappropriate emails. However
this may result in messages taking slightly longer than previously to be
circulated to everyone as they will now have to be "approved" before they
are sent to all list members.
As it will also increase the workload of your 2 admin-list owners. As Jim,
as you all know, is about to take early retirement, I would be very
grateful if someone else would volunteer to help me manage the list from the
autumn onwards. It is not an onerous responsibility, even with the element
of "approval" now involved. All offers of support will be gratefully
received!
It is probably also useful to reinforce the other advice that has been
proffered recently about dealing with unsolicited and unwanted emails.
* If your Computer Centre is made aware of the problem they should be
able to add blocks on incoming e-mails to prevent most if not all such
emails being circulated within your institution's email system ( This is
why some members of the admin-student list have not received the emails that
have been the subject of discussion and others have)
* If you do receive unsavoury emails it is best to ignore and delete
any such emails and NEVER reply to them as a reply merely confirms that you
are an active email address and is likely to encourage more.
