Lynzie,We are currently looking at this and find it to be rather more complicated
than at first appears. The key approach we are taking is to try to link the
retention of student scripts to the length of time available to students to
lodge an appeal. In other words, if three months following the final exam
board is the window of opportunity for the lodging of an appeal, then after
this date we can destroy exam scripts (other than those kept as a sample for
external moderation).
The possibility of a student lodging a legal appeal after this point is
real, but rather than keeping everything for 6 years we would like to say
that if the student has not taken advantage of the early appeal procedure
then we cannot be reasonably expected to keep everything for a long period
"just in case".
I stress though that this is not yet all decided or agreed, and a further
complication also involves the retention of examiners comments, depending on
where they have been written!

Dear all
I have had a query regarding the storage of processed examination scripts.
Currently at the University of Bristol, scripts are kept by individual
departments for varying lengths of time.
I would be interested in hearing if other Universities have a specific
policy on the minimum period of time that scripts are stored and who is
responsible for their safekeeping once they have been marked.
I understand that examination scripts are specifically exempted from subject
access provisions (Schedule 7 paragraph 9) of the Data Protection Act 1998.
However, are there any other requirements that need to be considered?
