I think a similar idea was floated some years ago (with HESA
involvement ?), but as far as I'm aware it came to nothing, for a
number of reasons. Data Protection is an obvious complicating
factor, but there are more practical reasons. What employer is
going to pay a private firm for information we all currently give out
without charge and what institution is going to charge for
information that may benefit a former student? Also if they do not
have a complete record from all institutions going back many years
the 'service' is not likely to be particularly useful.
