At KAC no student is permitted to have a mobile phone at their exam desk.
Students are advised to leave the phone with their personal belongings
either at the front of the room or in a cloakroom which is kept locked
during the exam session. Instructions to this effect appear on the exam
timetable, on door signs to exam venues and we make at last two announcement
at the start of each exam.
So far, no phone has gone off during an exam and no student has been found
to have a phone at their desk after the announcements. Touch wood!
A stern lecture would be response should this happen. But I'm interested to
hear the varied responses.

Subject: mobile phones in examinations
Dear All
I would be very interested to know how other institutions
deal with mobile
phones going off in examinations.
At Queen Mary students are warned that they must turn off
mobiles before
entering an examination room and that if their mobile goes
off during an
examination they will be reported to the Academic Registrar
and may be
fined.
In practice no-one has ever been fined, rather they get a
stern lecture from a
senior member of staff. We don't appear to have had any
problems with
repeat offenders.
We have nothing specific in our examination regulations
about mobile
phones. I would like to tighten up on the information we
actually give to
students before an examination starts.
I would be happy to provide a summary of information
gathered from
responses to this e-mail.
Thanks for your help.
Regards
Andy
