Re the exchanges of views on Secularity
I hesitate to contribute to this rather complex discussion, however here
goes.  While I do appreciate that some Universities may wish to maintain,
even emphasise that they are secular institutions, is it not possible
none-the-less to respect members of the University religious commitment  by
allowing time off for religious festivals etc and making a prayer or
meditation room available?
Even secular Universities get Easter and Christmas holidays allowing their
Christian staff to celebrate without requiring special concessions.
(incidentally traditional Quakers do not celebrate these festivals
regarding each day as equally holy)
I can't see why a University cannot identify itself as secular in position,
defining its essential function as academic and not tied to any religious
group or beliefs, but that part of its support systems might  include  the
recognition their staff and  students religious needs/duties and
appropriate accomodation of these. While not promoting or upholding any
particular religious belief the University could appropriately recognise
the   religious commitment of members of its community.

A problem I see however is how far one extends this.  There are some very
minority religions such as Druidism and the Wiccan religion. I have never
had any special request from members of these groups as their religion does
not appear to require special provision, but there are others I expect and
we do need to be clear about how we define religion and what provision we
can make.

I also believe that atheism or agosticism needs to be recognised as a
position in any policy or statement on religion, as these can be strongly
held positions.
