The Widening Participation Agenda and
Art, Design and Communication Higher Education
The Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College
Committee Room A, Farnham Campus
Thursday 28 March 10am - 4pm
What is the Widening Participation agenda? Where did it come from? What
does it mean for teachers and students in Art Design and Communication? How
will it affect our teaching? Will it affect standards?
These are some of the questions that have been asked by colleagues and
raised as significant issues in the recent needs analysis carried out by the
ADC-LTSN. This analysis suggested a conflict between a perception of Higher
Education as an elite academic institution with the increasingly demanding
reality of our experiences as teachers moving into a system of mass
education.
This workshop begins to address these questions, examines the assumptions
and attitudes about the nature of Higher Education, and encourages
collaborative, constructive and effective pedagogic responses to national
and institutional policy - as well to the needs of an increasingly diverse
student population.
Participants
This event will be of interest to all staff in Art, Design and Communication
who share these concerns and who would like to contribute to discussion and
to the construction of solutions for the sector
Process
The workshop will include presentations and case studies, small group
discussions and opportunity for questions and discussion
