Shattered pedagogies or broken windows? Problem based learning in HE
Background
Curricula change towards problem-based learning is becoming a feature
of higher education where the demands of universities and employers
are requiring that professionals of the future can adapt to changing
climates. This appears to be because problem-based learning is seen
to offer students independence in inquiry as well as enabling them to
develop skills for life and work such as flexibility, creativity,
critique and teamwork.
Participants
This workshop will be suitable for those who are considering
implementing problem-based learning, small or large scale, and in any
discipline within the curriculum. Those who have recently implemented
problem-based learning and would like to explore alternative
techniques and methods than they have adopted to date would also be
welcome.
Aims
To examine the philosophy and process of problem-based learning
To identity ways of using problem-based learning within the curriculum
To explore models of problem-based learning
To discuss recent research into the roles and experiences of PBL facilitators
To explore forms of assessment and difficulties associated with
assessment in PBL
Process
The workshop will comprise brief presentations; opportunities to
write trigger materials and ample opportunity for questions, queries
and discussion.
About the workshop facilitator
Maggi Savin-Baden is a Principal Lecturer at Coventry University
where she is Deputy Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre
in Health. She first began using problem-based learning in 1986 and
commenced research into it in 1987. Maggi's research focused on staff
and students' experiences of problem-based learning in 4 universities
in the United Kingdom. Over the last ten years Maggi has consulted
widely on problem-based learning and she has recently been funded to
set up a problem-based support network that promotes good practice in
this field. In September 2000 she was invited to the University of
Cape Town to help to set up a problem-based postgraduate diploma in
occupational therapy and facilitate the development of an
interprofessional problem-based undergraduate programme for six
different professions. She was an invited keynote speaker at the Asia
Pacific Conference on Problem-based Learning, Australia in December
2001 and also at the PBL 2002 Conference, Baltimore, USA in June.
Maggi's book which explores the complexities of using problem-based
learning for staff, students and institutions, entitled
'Problem-based Learning in Higher Education: Untold Stories' was
published with SRHE and Open University Press in March 2000.
