Staff Development Workshop on Learning, Teaching and Assessments for
Lecturers teaching Art, Design and Communication to d/Deaf Students
- free of charge to all delegates.
Background
Over the last two years, the School of Art and Design has undertaken a DfES
funded Innovations project entitled Extending education and career
opportunities for the Deaf community with particular reference to
developing generic and subject specific language skills. The project has
achieved the following:
· The production of a careers web site for employers and Deaf
graduates.
· The creation of an online British Sign Language/English glossary
for art and design education.
· The validation of a specialist English for Deaf Learners course,
with specialist subject orientation in art, computing or science.
· The publication of a guidance booklet for lecturers teaching art
and design to Deaf students.
The Workshop
This one day workshop, based on the research and developments described
above, is designed to support lecturers when working with d/Deaf students.
The workshop will be run by an academic in art and design, a specialist in
deafness and a Deaf arts practitioner.
Aims
The workshop will provide an overview of the issues facing staff when
teaching or assessing d/Deaf students and explore the distinctive ways in
which d/Deaf students learn. It will provide practical guidance for
maximising learning in a number of common art and design situations. It
will also offer clarification of new responsibilities placed on lecturers
through the new Special Educational Needs Act 2001.
Outcomes
At the end of the workshop delegates will:
§ Be more d/Deaf aware
§ Have a better understanding of the needs of d/Deaf students
§ Have a repertoire of pedagogic tools specifically designed to make
learning environments inclusive
§ Be aware of SENDA legislation and its implications for curriculum
design and delivery
§ Have access to further sources of information and resources to
share amongst colleagues
Who is the workshop for?
The workshop will benefit specialist lecturers in art, design &
communication and related learner support and library staff.
Practicalities
