It might also be a good idea to look at the prevailing wind situation as
these will blow rain under a canopy, some sides of your building will be
more vunerable that others and require a different solution,ie screens or
rain deflectors to counter the wind action so tha teh walkway can be left
open.
Another idea would be to have an edge that was absorbant such as bark
chippings, thought it might be difficult to find such a surface that is
wheelchair friendly, which I doubt bark chips will be.
