Hi everyone, I am in the process of writing a work package for our
(Sheffield, Salford, UCL) EPSRC SUE on Human Environment Interactions
/ Socially Responsible Design Consortium, to do some user-centred
research into public loos. The Centre for Accessible Environments is
my non-academic partner. Most public conveniences aren't! The DDA is
likely to have an adverse impact on existing provision, with a
consequent deterioration in the quality of town centres especially in
the '24 hour city'. The public toilet is a subject most people have
a view about - and / or horror stories to tell - and there are real
issues that need to be researched that relate to making the town
accessible to people with continence problems (or even mums with
young children and ladies of a certain age) and providing safe,
clean, convenient and accessible public loos and their use for drug
taking etc. Its not a glamorous area for research. I'll let you know
how we get on. Meanwhile, if you have any good / bad examples, please
let me know. Julienne Hanson, UCL.
