Hi Adrian
of course they could have been thinking that to make the site a WAP site so
the text would work well on mobile phones that are WAP enabled, but I guess
not. Anyway just goes to show that care and attention is needed when
creating web sites and that virtual curb cuts are just as important as
physical ones. Sorry for the technical speak but since we started out on a
website for a USA museum I used curb cut rather than the UK dropped kerb,
and I haven't got the foggiest what WAP stands for except that you cannot
sure the web from your mobile phone the same as your computer unless the
website is WAP.
Whilst on clarification an "alt tag" is the alternative tag box that appears
on the screen when you hold your mouse over an image on the web. It is good
practice from an accessibility point of view to ensure that the alt tag is
available and meaningful. Quite often it gets left off or is just a
reference to the image file name or helpfully just says "image".
As Sarah points out Bobby is only a start, it also comes in 3 levels of
accessibility in the checker and the logo at the end is different depending
on which level your site can achieve.
Finally it will be interesting to see how much beyond USA based history they
include in the museum which I see still seems to have the builders in at the
moment. I suppose at least in a virtual museum that is still under
construction you do not go into the lift to find that some of the buttons
are missing. Yes that happened to me in the Great Court at the British
Museum when I went the second week after it opened. Stuck my fingers
straight into the hole where the button should be. Also went into the male
toilets to find the plumber holding the urinal in his hands - now that is
what I call service. He was less impressed with the outlet being over his
shoe - well they shouldn't have said the building was open if it wasn't
finished!
cheers
