Research into Legibility and Conspicuity of Emergency Route Signage for
Fully Sighted and Visually Impaired People
The Research Group for Inclusive Environments is involved in unique
research into the needs of physically disabled, sensory impaired and
older people within the built environment.
Funding has been awarded for a research project into the legibility and
conspicuity of emergency escape route (EER) signs. The results will be
used to develop design guidance for EER signs, ensuring that they are
suitable for all building users, including those with visual impairment.
Ideally you will have an understanding of the issues relating to
wayfinding, signage and visual impairment, perhaps with a background in
lighting or colour. You may hold a postgraduate qualification. You
must be able to interact effectively with visually impaired and older
people, be capable of working on your own and meeting deadlines. Full
support will be given.
