Dear Colleague

Last November saw the launch of the EQUAL Research Network, an EPSRC
supported network for researchers and research users interested in
issues arising from the ageing population, the needs of older people and
disabled people and the contribution which engineering, design and
physical sciences can make to meeting those needs.

The network builds on the highly successful EQUAL initiative. This has
taken as its touchstone, multidisciplinary working directly with older
and disabled people in collaboration with intermediate agencies, such as
health care providers, charitable and voluntary organisations. It is
hardly surprising that the professions of the built environment are
playing a major role in the EQUAL initiative and the network – given
that for many people the constraints to enjoying a good quality of life
arise from the design of homes, buildings and physical infrastructure.
EQUAL is an exciting programme – as you will find from its web site
www.equal.ac.uk .

The EQUAL network is open to all with an interest in the developing and
applying research to issues arising from the ageing population and
meeting the needs of older people and disabled people especially the
role of engineering, design and physical sciences in meeting those
needs.

The EQUAL Network is co-ordinated by Verity Smith
([log in to unmask]) and directed by me ([log in to unmask])
with the support of a steering committee drawn from a variety of
backgrounds and disciplines.

The network will pursue a number of activities, but especially workshops
and seminars. Details of the next two events are below.

On 21st March 2002 there will be a meeting at the University of Reading
on Vision and Deafness in the Built Environment. This will be a
conventional research workshop meeting structured around presentations
of research projects, some inputs from intermediaries and discussion and
debate.

Full details of the meeting can be found by visiting the EQUAL Website
at www.equal.ac.uk and then clicking the link – Events. There will be
no charge for the workshop. If you would like to attend this meeting
then please let Verity Smith, the EQUAL Co-ordinator know as soon as
possible ([log in to unmask])

On Friday 12th April 2002 there will be a meeting at the University of
Strathclyde in Glasgow on Bio-engineering and Mobility. Bernie Conway,
the host of the meeting, is planning presentations and briefings from
international figures as well as inputs from researchers involved with
EQUAL and researchers who are involved with other programmes. Details
will be available soon but if you are interested in attending then
please let Verity Smith know ([log in to unmask]).

Other meetings are planned for later in the year and we hope to have a
timetable for Winter 2002 and Spring 2003 fairly soon.

Finally if you have not yet joined the EQUAL Network and would like to
do so then please let Verity have your details as soon as possible. The
information which we need can be found on the EQUAL website
www.equal.ac.uk and by clicking the link - Join the Network.

Best wishes

Peter Lansley
