' Inclusive Design: a tool for better business? '
6.00pm for 6.30pm- 8.00pm, Wednesday 27th November
Wilson Room, Portcullis House
Inclusive design means designing products and buildings which as many
people as possible can use. However it has been estimated that about a
fifth of adults in Europe have difficulty in carrying out everyday tasks. A
DTI study revealed that a high proportion of commonly used products did not
meet the needs of the older or disabled people who used them. They are
forced to choose between the limited range of products which may suit them,
and may be forced to buy expensive attachments to compensate for inadequate
design. This is not only unjust but makes bad business sense.
This meeting will examine this issue, focusing on the value of inclusive
design to better business practices, increased profit margins and UK
export. Test cases will include increased profit through accessible
building design at the National Portrait Gallery and Bluewater Shopping
Centre, as well as improved sales, productivity and export through
inclusive design in product development.
I do hope you will be able to attend this important meeting, the speakers
for which will include:
Maria Eagle, Minister for disabled people
Sarah Langton-Lockton and Mary Noble, Center for Accessible Environments
Yvonne Howard, JMU Access Partnership
Julia Cassim, Helen Hamlyn Research Centre
Mike Dempsey, CDT Design
