Dear colleagues,
With sponsorship from PPARC and BNSC, the Royal Astronomical Society has
just published an ilustrated booklet entitled "Geophysics in the UK". This
provides an overview of current UK research interests in areas of geophysics
and solar system science that are promoted by the Society. These include
studies of:
* the interior of the Earth,
* other planets, moons and comets in the solar system,
* the ionised gases and magnetic fields that flow out of the Sun and
their influence on other solar system bodies, most especially the Earth.
These areas span the interests of several Research Councils, in particular
both NERC and PPARC. The booklet discusses the strength of the UK
contribution to world-wide progress and our potential for the future. It
stresses that UK scientists are among the best in the world in these areas -
often setting the agenda in terms of new ideas and new experiments - and
that the UK has an excellent reputation for contributing to, and often
leading, international collaborations. This booklet aims to give a flavour
of these points, without requiring specialist knowledge of the science.
This booklet is a companion to "Astronomy in the UK", which was published by
RAS in 2000 to provide a similar review of UK work in Astronomy. Copies of
both booklets are available via the web (PDF download) from the new RAS web
site. Go to the RAS Publications page
http://www.ras.org.uk/html/ras_publ.html and click on the links for the two
booklets.
Those of you who are RAS Fellows should have received a printed copy of the
booklet with your August copy of the RAS magazine "Astronomy and
Geophysics".
