Ph.D. Research Project
A BROADBAND TELESEISMIC STUDY OF THE LITHOSPHERE ACROSS THE IAPETUS SUTURE
ZONE IN IRELAND
The Geophysics Section at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies
(DIAS) is seeking a Ph.D. student to begin work on a passive seismic
experiment across the late-Caledonian Iapetus Suture Zone in SW Ireland.
This experiment (ISLE: Irish Seismic Lithospheric Experiment) will
investigate the lithospheric structure in the region and is targeted at
previously measured P-wave travel-time residuals across the suture zone.
The project is designed to test primarily the idea that this
travel-time anomaly is due to seismic anisotropy in the mantle within the
suture zone using mainly converted teleseismic shear-wave energy. Spatial
variations in seismic properties at various azimuths will be measured
using shear-wave splitting techniques. These will be compared with the
geologically and geophysically mapped tectonic patterns within the
Iapetus Suture Zone produced by the oblique closure of the Iapetus Ocean
ca 400 Ma ago. The experiment will build upon a large body of earlier
work on the crustal structure, onshore Ireland, based upon controlled
source seismic and potential field studies. It will be the first of
its kind to investigate the seismic properties of the sub-crustal
lithosphere in Ireland and how these are related to the geodynamic
development of the crust.
This is a fully funded project and is available to start as soon as
possible. The project will involve fieldwork, seismic data analysis and
numerical modelling, and would suit a student with a B.Sc. or M.Sc. (or
equivalent) in Geophysics, Physics or Geology. S/he will be self-motivated
with an ability to formulate and test scientific ideas. The stipend is
12,700 Euro per annum (tax free) plus fees.
