The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), with Headquarters
in Geneva and Offices throughout the world, seeks an experienced
Statistician for its Population and Geographic Data Section based in Geneva.
The Section is responsible for collecting, compiling, analysing and
reporting statistics and analyzing trends on refugees, asylum-seekers and
other persons of concern to the Office. The Section also supports country
operations in enhancing their registration and population data management
strategies as well as in introducing improved management of geographic
information. Under the supervision of
the Senior Statistician, the incumbent will:
- Support the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of UNHCR's
annual, quarterly, monthly and ad hoc statistics.
- Develop, maintain and manage databases and dissemination tools for UNHCR
population data, asylum statistics, indicators and related information.
- Promote responsible use of statistics, indicators and trends as a
management tool to improve the quality of UNHCR operations.
- Train and support UNHCR staff so as to promote, introduce and strengthen
data collection and management methods, standards, procedures and systems,
including improved use of registration, population surveys and estimation.
- Prepare and draft basic reports (analyses, trends) for internal and
external use.
- Maintain close working relations with internal and external data providers
and users.
- Respond to internal and external statistical queries.
- Monitor trends relating to refugees, asylum-seekers, and international
migration.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications: Advanced university degree in population studies,
demography, statistics or related discipline. Advanced user of/proven skills
in database management or statistical software (e.g. Microsoft Excel,
Access, GIS). A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible relevant
experience required, of which 3 years will have been in the same functional
area. Working experience or knowledge in the area of refugee, asylum or
migration statistics and trends is definitely an advantage.
Languages: Fluency in English essential, with working knowledge of French
desirable.
