PETER READ
Australia's 'Stolen Generation' and the Extinction of Aboriginality
In a rare visit to Britain by a key figure in Australian aboriginal history,
oral history and the 'stolen generation' debate, Peter Read explores the
intricacies of family dynamics, extreme violence and trauma in a mid-1980s
urban environment, the long term effects of institutionalisation and the
probable extinction of an Aboriginal identity 70 years after the forced
removal of the first generation of aboriginal children. His talk takes as a
case study an aborted three-generational history of a family affected by the
removal policy.
Peter Read is a British Academy visiting lecturer and a Senior Research
Fellow at the Australian National University in Canberra. His recent
publications include Belonging (Cambridge University Press) and A Rape of
the Soul So Profound: The Return of the Stolen Generations (Allen & Unwin).
Organised by the British Library National Sound Archive and The Centre for
Continuing Education, in association with the Centre for Life History
Research at the University of Sussex.
