Good MOrning,
Thanks Peter for introducing yourself. With membership to the BASA listserv
steadily increasing under Carol's moderating, may I invite people who
have joined over the last two months to post a message introducing
themselves. I have also included a message regarding the audit currently
being carried on the Association's membership (see below).
(For information: Listserv membership is free, but one can also formally
join the Black and Asian Studies Association. As a BASA member you will
receive the BASA newsletter and will be able attend the BASA conferences at
a reduced, member's rate. For further information contact Marika Sherwood,
BASA Secretary, ICS, 28 Russell Square, London WC1B 5DS or
[log in to unmask])
Despite the various levels of involvement, all should feel free to post
queries; send out information on forthcoming events (workshops,
performances, conferences, seminars and talks); introduce burning issues you
want to tease out; as well as post relevant information you want to share
(i.e., re. Black History MOnth events; progress being made on proposals or
projects; or relevant information from related listservs).
It may also be a good time to go through some basic features of this
listserv:
1) The address to use if sending messages to group: [log in to unmask]
2) If replying to the group: use the 'reply all' option
3) If replying to the person who sent the message: use 'reply'
4) There is also a feature that when activated will allow you to receive a
digest of all the messages sent within a specific period in one email. For
instance . instead of 5 individual messages appearing in you inbox, you will
receive the following message
There are 6 messages totalling 616 lines in this issue.
Topics of the day:
1. FW: re. V.S. Naipaul Conference, Nov 2002
2. nominations for Blue Plaques
3. Fw: conference next year (2)
4. the peopling of the UK
5. Fw: After September 11
followed by the messages in full
Please get in contact (off-list) if you want this service.
Have a good week,
Roiyah

Request for summaries of BASA members' research interests
cc: "[log in to unmask]" <[log in to unmask]>
At a recent Black and Asian Studies Association (BASA) Management Committee
Meeting (held at the Institute of Education on Thursday 13th June 2002) it
was decided to begin collating detailed information about the research
interests, activities, projects and campaigning interests of the
Association's membership. Some of this information will be aggregated to
form part of the supporting data that is included with BASA's forthcoming
application for Heritage Lottery funding (to be submitted next month), and
all the biographies received will also be incorporated into a database
housing information about individual and collective research activities of
the membership.
All members of BASA are invited to submit a short summary (i.e. mini
biography) of up to 300 words about themselves and their research interests,
structured as follows:
* Your name:
* First year of BASA membership:
* Reason(s) for joining BASA and details of past/present research
interests
* Details of past/present involvement in BASA sub-committees (e.g.
BASA Education Sub-Committee; BASA Research Resources Working Party
(formerly the BASA Archives Working Party), etc.)
* Brief statement about other organisations to which you are
affiliated that are concerned with the history and lived experiences of
black, Asian and other minority ethnic peoples in the UK - particularly if
you currently serve (or have served) in an official capacity on behalf of
the Association
* List of contributions to the BASA Newsletter - e.g. feature
articles, book reviews, biographies of historic figures, conference
summaries, + any other ('one-off' or regular) contributions to a specific
section of the newsletter
* Details of any published books, journal articles, web site reports,
conference proceedings, exhibitions, and/or news reports, etc. that you have
contributed to that feature the history of black and Asian peoples in the UK
* Date you submitted your summary to BASA
* Your email address
* Your tel. contact number (optional)
Please return your summary to the BASA Management Committee (c/o Ms Carolyn
Abel, email [log in to unmask]), preferably by Friday 5 July.
If you would like to return your summary/biography by post, please send it
c/o Marika Sherwood, BASA Secretary, ICS, 28 Russell Square, London WC1B
5DS.
Many thanks
Carol (on behalf of Carolyn Abel, BASA Mgt. Cttee.)
NB: Any information supplied to the BASA Management Committee will be stored
in a database and will eventually become part of the Association's archive.
Biographies can, of course, also be returned via email to this list serve
(hosted by Jiscmail, c/o [log in to unmask]), but please be advised that
this is an open, public list and, therefore, all your data will be viewable
by non-members and members of the Association alike.
The biographies of members of the BASA Management Committee will be collated
and published in the Association's newsletter (ISSN: 0969-4722) later in the
year.
